2020 Eagle ProjectProject Manager Ryan Meyer of Troop 200The mission of Roosevelt Magnet School, as an innovative fine arts academy, is to ensure that each student develops to his or her academic, artistic and personal potential by integrating the arts and technology within a safe, nurturing environment, which embraces diversity in partnership with families and the community.
When COVID-19 hit, the need for an outdoor space to facilitate learning became apparent. The school's existing courtyard was originally intended as a performance and gathering space, but with a little ingenuity this scout was able to transform the space into a usable outdoor classroom for the Kindergarten thru 8th grade students. |
Before
The existing space had only a platform to be used as a stage, but the existing stage had no steps and was difficult to access for the younger students. Teachers at the school felt it was a safety concern for the younger students because of the height and risk of falling. Additionally, there was a lack of seating and no presentation surface.
School's Wish List: |
- Flexible Space: Maintain the ability to use the space for performances when not in use as a classroom.
- Flexible Seating: Weather resistant seating that can be moved around the area to allow for social distancing, and provide a writing surface for students during lessons or set up and utilized for performances. - Step across the back of the platform so students can easily access the stage from the building side. - Ground Level Platforms on Stage Right & Left to extend the usable area of stage and make entrances from Stage Right and Stage Left more safe for younger students. - Presentation surface: Whiteboard or Chalkboard that can be used for lessons and removed for performances. |
Weather Resistant Convertible Benches were ordered from NorthernTool.com
Each set including shipping was $218.00 for a total cost of $436.00 5ft. Outdoor Convert-a-Bench — Sierra Timber, Model# 5RCATST |
After
Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 200 worked approximately 98 hours constructing the platforms on stage left and stage right, as well as a long step across the building side of the stage. A remove-able white board was constructed that can be hung on either of the two existing uprights for classroom lessons. It is light enough that it can be easily carried by two middle school students. In addition to constructing the platforms and steps, volunteers assembled four convertible benches. 2 benches can be flipped and put together to make a picnic table, or can be used in the flipped position as a writing surface. When flipped down the benches can seat either 3 adults or two "socially distant" students.
